If it weren't damn-near three hours long, and if it didn't have a few too many swear words, The Postman could have worked as a film for sprogs aged six to 11. You can go with the idea of a heroic postie implausibly rallying the downtrodden, or you can have fun making fun of its awfulness. Costner is a slef appointed postman who takes on the role of mediator and unifier of the nation through letter writing and sharing of ideas and ideals. One thing can be said for the movie: whether you buy into the corn and appreciate Mr Costner for his earnestness, or find all the unrestrained sentimentality (in slow motion) difficult to swallow, it is never completely boring.
